We recently spent an evening in Asheville, NC at the Biltmore Village Inn.
It is beautiful Victorian bed and breakfast built by Samuel Reed, private attorney of George Vanderbilt. Our room was elegant and cozy with an inviting sleeping area and attached sitting room. With two fireplaces, a beautiful suite, and time away from everything we were perfectly comfortable and able to relax and unwind. I cannot adequately express how wonderful it was to getaway for the day. Just one day and the stress of life dissipates. It does not completely disappear, but the chaos and concern upon return are more manageable.
Mental health days are important for personal, and even overall success. Walking away, taking a break, and coming back refreshed can offer new perspective and energize the project. It also helps to combat burn out. Unfortunately, periodically taking your vacation days is frowned upon in some organizations. It’s almost like you’re not dedicated to the job if you take the days you have earned. Some even feel guilty for taking time off.
What if you think about it a different way? What happens when you take a five-minute or fifteen minute break? You come back with a clearer head and your performance improves. Taking a day once in a while can actually enhance your work performance. If you are continually performing at an exhausting pace your are not performing at your best. Taking the time to do something you enjoy, or taking the time to do nothing at all, can enhance your life and work performance. Sometimes the weekend is not enough. Sometimes you need more than the regularly scheduled weekend. You need to step away from the routine and do something to jump-start your enthusiasm.
Now, if you find yourself needing a mental health day once a week or every two weeks…you may want to reconsider your career path.
Our trip this week was worked into another event. We left a day early and spent the entire day focusing on things we wanted to do. Visiting Biltmore is always enjoyable. We do not always tour the house. Sometimes it is just enjoying the other aspects of the property. This time it was lunch on the grounds, then a little hiking, and off to the Village Inn to check in and spend the rest of the evening doing absolutely nothing but relaxing. It was exactly what I needed to reset and recharge. The break or time away doesn’t have to be long. It doesn’t have to be expensive. It can be as simple or as exciting as you want it to be. Whatever is chosen, it needs to be chosen for the sake of your joy. While you should always strive to give joy, it is imperative that you also seek joy. Find the joy in your life. Sometimes you have to take a break to do just that.
Live life. Give joy. Be at peace.
